L'Alt Camp and La Conca de Barberà have among its monumental inheritance one of the main modernist cellars concentration of Catalonia. Cesar Martinell, Pere Domènech i Roure and other architects built what are called the wine cathedrals
with the purpose of modernising the agriculture and the wine elaboration process. An extraordinary result was reached since the artistic influences gave this cellars an architectural beauty which has been studied by the Catalan modernism style lovers.
ESPLUGA DE FRANCOLÍ
Angel Guimerà baptised the co-operative cellar of L’Espluga de Francolí as the wine Cathedral, the best name it could ever had been given. It was built under the direction of the architect Pere Domènech i Roura.
In this temple worship is given to wine, oils, sparkling cavas, mixtela, muscatel and old wine. The cellar houses the Wine museum, which is well worth seeing.
The cellar of Vila-Rodona, a Cesar’s Martinell work, is an example of the begin-ning of the 20th centu-ry splendid modernist architecture. Dating from 1919, it is nowa-days a point of reference in the
area due to the high quality elaboration of its wines, which have been rewarded in several occasions.
The conjunction of the Moder-nism and the austerity of the 19th century style gives Nulles another worthy work of the ar-chitect Cesar Martinell. The agricultural co-operative of Sant Isidre, founded in 1915, produces high quality wines and sparkling cavas
Considered a mo-dernist jewel, it is a work of the archi-tect Cesar Marti-nell, who was born in the close village of Valls. Dating from 1918, it was the first agricultural building directed by this renowned architect. It is thought this cellar is his most emblematic work.
In one of the oldest villages in the county we find the vestiges of the trace Cesar Martinell left in our regions, a modernist cellar of interesting architecture.
It houses the first co-operative founded in Spain in 1898.
