| The region's natural surroundings make La Conca de Barberà an ideal wine-growing area. The Francolí and Anguera river basins, enclosed by the Prades, Miramar, Cogulló and Tallat mountains, form an almost perfect oval with a microclimate that is just right for the cultivation of vines. The combination of a rich heritage and ancestral traditions has paved the way for the production of excellent wines.
The vineyards where La Conca de Barberà's wines are cultivated, whose quality is guaranteed by a Regulating Council, cover an area of 9900 ha with an annual production of 250,000 hl. White and rosé wines are predominant but some excellent red wines are also made. The grape varieties traditionally used in the region have recently been successfully combined with new varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, to give very good results.
The rosé wines, made using natural methods with the local grape variety trepat , are considered to be among the best in Catalonia. The cavas produced with the macabeu and parellada varieties are also of a high standard.
It is well worth tasting the wines and cavas made in La Conca de Barberà region, whether directly in the wine cellars or to accompany the typical dishes served in any of the region's restaurants.
Most of La Conca de Barberà's wine maker's co-operatives are built in the Modernist style. Generations of individual wine makers have gained from years of experience. The co-operatives are now one of the region's main characteristic features and, at the same time, one of its main tourist attractions. |
